Human Services, with a specialization in Substance Abuse Prevention, A.A.S.

The Human Services Program offers an AAS degree in Human Services with specialties in Addiction Counseling and Substance Abuse Prevention.  The Addiction Counseling specialty is for students pursuing licensure as chemical dependency counselors or are currently licensed as a chemical dependency counselor.  Students completing this degree fulfill the basic requirements set by the Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS) for pursuing licensure as a chemical dependency counselor.  Licensure as a chemical dependency counselor in Texas requires a minimum of an Associate’s Degree with specific course work required.  Individuals who are currently licensed by DSHS as chemical dependency counselors in Texas or certified by the International Certification and Reciprocity Consortium as an Alcohol/Drug Counselor (ADC) without an associate’s degree who complete this specialization may be awarded up to 27 semester hours of DAAC/PSYT credit toward degree completion.  Contact the Human Services Program Coordinator for details.

The Substance Abuse Prevention specialty is designed for individuals to pursue the Associate Prevention Specialist designation, through DSHS and/or certification as a Prevention Specialist through the IC&RC.  Individuals who are currently IC&RC certified Prevention Specialists may be awarded up to 27 semester hours of DAAC/PSYT credit toward degree completion.

Transfer agreements have been established with several universities.  For more information, please contact the Human Services Program Coordinator.

The Human Services Program/Coordinator is approved to offer continuing education credit for LCDC & LPC licensure renewal.  For further information, please contact the Human Services Program Coordinator.

Students must meet with the Human Services Program Coordinator before enrolling in any Human Services course.  Students enrolling in any of the Human Services degree/certificate program specialties must meet all current basic skill prerequisites and be college level eligible in English, Math, and Reading.
