Computer Programming Intermediate, Level 1 Certificate

Return to Degree Plans & Certificates - Academic/Technical Return to: Degree Plans & Certificates - Academic/Technical

The Computer Programming Intermediate Level I Certificate plan helps prepare the student for an internship-level position in programming computers.  This certificate and the Computer Programming Basics Level I Certificate builds on, represent a majority of the technical coursework required, while providing stepping-stone goals for students pursuing the Computer Programmer A.A.S.  The included Capstone Internship is a work-based learning experience that enables the student to apply specialized occupational theory, skills and concepts.  A learning plan is developed by the college and the employer.

Entry-level computer programmers can update, repair, modify, and expand existing programs, and progress to perform analysis, design, and development of new programs.  The programmer converts a computer-solution design or design change into a logical series of instructions that the computer can follow.  The programmer codes these instructions in any of a number of programming languages (such as C++ and Python), depending on the need.  This certificate plan includes study of software program design and structured programming techniques, since programmers have begun to assume some of the responsibilities that were once performed only by software engineers:  some computer programmers now assist software engineers in identifying user needs and designing certain parts of computer programs, as well as other functions.  This field continues to evolve quickly, reflecting changes in technology and new areas of specialization, as well as the changing practices of employers.

Note:  The COSC programming courses included below are part of the Computer Science Field of Study Curriculum, and may also be applied toward a four-year institution’s bachelor’s degree.
