Information Technology (IT) courses that are defined by the state of Texas Workforce Education Course Manual (WECM) are taught in the Computer Information Systems (CIS) Department at San Antonio College. WECM is an inventory of current workforce education courses available for use by public Texas two-year community colleges which ensures the relevancy and transferability of courses between these community colleges.
The IT courses in the CIS department develop skills that are in demand by employers in both the public and private sectors. Graduates will be able to work in computer occupations such as these:
- Computer Programming – Learn the popular languages of today’s computing environments. Java, C++, Visual Basic.NET, SQL, PHP, Linux, HTML, JavaScript, Windows Vista and more. This degree leads to entry level Information Technology jobs in various businesses and industries. Learn to program for the Web.
- Computer Database Specialist – This degree leads to Information Technology jobs related to data management. Learn data management skills using the #1 and #2 most popular Database Management Systems in the world today: Oracle and Microsoft SQL Server. Data analysis, database design, database programming, and database administration are all aspects of this degree. Learn to program for the Web.
- Computer Network Administration – This degree focuses on network and system administration skills in the Windows and Linux operating environments. Gain the skills required for A+ certification, CISCO CCNA certification, Microsoft Windows Server certifications and Linux + certification.
Network Routing track – support the routers and switches LANs and WANs.
Network Server Administrator track – support network operating systems on servers and clients.
- Computer Security Administration – This degree provides network and system administration skills with additional security concerns and skills. Firewalls, Intrusion detection and TCP/IP skills are taught and practiced in this degree program. The computer security area is the newest and fastest growing sector of the Information Technology profession today.
Four Associate of Applied Science (AAS) Degrees are available in CIS: Computer Programming, Computer Network Administration, Computer Database Specialist, and Computer Security Administration.
There are ten Level I Certificates: Computer Desktop Support Technician, MySQL Database, Oracle Database, SQL Server Database, C++ Programming, JAVA Programming, VB.NET Programming, Linux Administrator, and Web Programming, Information Technology and Security.
There are four Enhanced Skills Certificates Computer Programming, Computer Security, Routers Administration, and Server Administration.
All programs and courses are developed and implemented in coordination with the CIS Advisory Committee which is comprised of computer professionals from the San Antonio metropolitan area. The entire curriculum reflects local community requirements. Graduates are able to pursue bachelor degrees at area colleges. Contact a CIS faculty advisor regarding transferability of courses to four-year institutions.
Instructional techniques which emphasize hands-on activities with computer hardware, software, and systems are designed to give students an understanding of their professional responsibilities and necessary occupational skills. The central purpose of all programs is to develop occupational competency. Students completing the Associate Degree Programs should be able to:
- Apply skills as indicated by the various degrees and certificates with a minimum of supervision.
- Operate practically any computer equipment after a brief orientation period.
- Prepare necessary documentation and communicate in a satisfactory manner with other personnel concerned.
- Direct their educational background and ability toward mastering new and special techniques as the need occurs.
The first three courses can be taken concurrently. ITSC 1301, ITNW 1325, and ITSE 1329 do not have a prerequisite course. ITSE 1311 has a prerequisite or co-requisite of ITSE 1329.
All students enrolled in Internet courses must contact the professor prior to the first day of class.
The Continuing Education Training Network Division frequently schedules non-credit, short-term courses related to computer information systems. For further information, please contact the Continuing Education Training Network.
Students may obtain an AAS Degree without an Enhanced Skills Certificate. To be eligible for the Enhanced Skills Certificate, the student must have completed the AAS Degree in their respective majors.
