Criminal Justice: Correctional Science (Tech Prep Program), A.A.S.

This degree is designed to assist students in developing the skills necessary for a career in corrections. Some of the criminal justice courses have equivalent transfer credit courses. For information on the transferability of courses, contact the Criminal Justice Program coordinator of or the department chairman. A workplace connection course is required. Mathematics competency is also required and must be demonstrated by passing with a “C” or better a college-level mathematics course of at least three credits or taking a minimum of a four credit-hour geology, chemistry, physics, astronomy, or biology course and receiving an appropriate mathematics competency score on either the Accuplacer or THEA exam.

Degree Requirements (Total Credit Hours 69)

Humanities or Visual/Performing Arts: 3 Credit Hours


Select 1 from the Humanities (40) Core 
Or
Additional Humanities (41) Core 
Or
Select 1 from the Visual and Performing Arts (50) Core 

Natural Science: 4 Credit Hours


Select 1 with lab from the Natural Sciences (30) Core

Exit Competencies


Students must pass each class with a grade of “C” or better.

Written Communication Competency:


ENGL 1301 - Composition I    and ENGL 1302 - Composition II 

Oral Communications Competency:


SPCH 1311 - Introduction to Speech Communication 

Mathematical Skill Competency:


THEA mathematics passing score of 230
Or Accuplacer elementary algebra score of 76 or higher
Or Any college-level mathematics course, MATH 1314 - College Algebra  , MATH 1332 - Contemporary Math I (Math for Liberal Arts Majors I)  or equivalent

Computer Competency:


Any computer-dedicated course of three semester hours or more. NOTE: Tech Prep Program high school students need to see the department chairman for course credit awards.
