The Associate of Arts Degree (AA) with a concentration in Dance is designed for students planning to transfer to a four-year university to major or minor in dance, and will benefit any student planning to enter a dance-related profession, including dance performance and direction, primary or secondary dance education, arts administration, or dance for physical fitness.
A comprehensive dance education will develop skills required to create, perform, communicate and understand dance. The Speech program offers an Associate of Arts (AA) Degree in Speech Communication. The department sponsors a highly successful Forensics Program. Students here compete with other college and university students in public speaking and literary performance events. A fundraising showcase each semester features the speeches and performances of forensics and acting students. Donations to this event support the Ron Lucke Scholarship Fund. These student scholarships, awarded at the end of each long term, reward their recipients’ academic achievement, professionalism, and dedication to speech and drama. Students who declare speech communication as their major should be advised by a member of the speech communication faculty to assure placement in the appropriate courses.

The Theatre Program offers both majors and interested students opportunities to perform in, design, build, and run theatrical productions. The Theatre program offers an Associate of Arts (AA) Degree in Drama. The department operates both the 1,004-seat McAllister Fine Arts Auditorium and the more intimate 140-seat McCreless Theatre. Most drama classes require students to participate in management, acting, and technical activities of the department. Auditions for departmental productions are open to any student in good academic standing.
The Theatre program’s production season offers the college and community a variety of theatrical offerings. The Theatre program produces four main stage theatre productions during the academic year. Proceeds from general public ticket sales support the Ron Lucke Scholarship Fund. These student scholarships, awarded at the end of each long term, reward their recipients’ academic achievement, professionalism, and dedication to theatre and speech communication. The Art program functions as a vital part of the college by providing quality instruction to our students and our community. It offers courses for students concentrating in Arts, leading to the Associate Degree (AA) in Art. Also offered is the required course work to fulfill the first two years of available 2 + 2 transfer agreements, leading to a bachelor’s degree. The Visual Art program also provides courses that satisfy the general education requirements in creative arts for students majoring in other disciplines. The courses available which will fulfill the core requirement are ARTS 1301, Art Appreciation; ARTS 1303, Art History I; and ARTS 1304, Art History II, and a list of first-level studio courses. The art studio courses require skills development that includes outside work. The time required varies with each student, and students should be prepared to adjust out-of-class schedules to achieve course competencies. Some four-year institutions may not accept all courses that are listed under “area of concentration” as part of a baccalaureate major. Students who declare Art as their major should be advised by a member of the visual art faculty to assure placement in the appropriate courses.
