Additional Program Information
All potential students must meet with the Human Services Program Coordinator or designee. The Level I Certificate Program in Addiction Studies is designed to meet the requirements set by the Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS) for individuals who have not obtained their chemical dependency license within five (5) years of their initial DSHS awarded counselor intern designation. These individuals must complete DSHS approved college courses. Upon completion of the required course work the individual can apply for reinstatement of their counselor intern status; and must meet any additional DSHS requirements to obtain their license as a chemical dependency counselor within 3 years of intern reinstatement. The student is responsible for confirming acceptance of certificate courses with DSHS. Students may have to provide a copy of their initial registration letter or show prior test scores and/or that they have completed the education requirements for initial licensure. Students enrolling in this certificate program must meet the basic skill prerequisites set by the department. Students working toward initial completion of DSHS registration may also be awarded this certificate with permission of the program coordinator.
