Human Services, with a specialization in Addiction Counseling, A.A.S. (formerly Human Services: Drug Alcohol Abuse Counseling)

The Human Services Program offers an AAS degree in Human Services with specialties in Addiction Counseling, Substance Abuse Prevention, and Gerontology.  The Addictions Counseling specialty is for students pursuing licensure as chemical dependency counselors or are currently licensed as a chemical dependency counselor.  Students completing this degree fulfill the basic requirements set by the Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS) for pursuing licensure as a chemical dependency counselor. Licensure as a chemical dependency counselor in Texas requires a minimum of an Associate’s Degree in an approved major field of study.  Individuals who are currently licensed by DSHS as chemical dependency counselors in Texas or certified by the International Certification and Reciprocity Consortium as an Alcohol/Drug Counselor (ADC) without an associate’s degree who complete this specialization may be awarded up to 27 semester hours of DAAC/PSYT credit toward degree completion.  Contact the Human Services Program Coordinator for details.

The Substance Abuse Prevention specialty is designed for individuals to pursue certification as a Prevention Specialist, through DSHS or the IC&RC. Individuals who are currently certified Prevention Specialists may be awarded up to 27 semester hours of DAAC/PSYT credit toward degree completion.

The Gerontology specialization is designed for individuals interested in the field of aging, or to enhance those currently working in some area of gerontological services. The specialty offers an opportunity for individuals to enhance their knowledge in the field of gerontology through formal education.

Formal 2+2 transfer agreements as well as informal agreements have been established with several local universities. For more information, please contact the Human Services Program Coordinator.

San Antonio College is designated as a provider of continuing education for licensure renewal. For further information, please contact the Human Services Program Coordinator.

Students must meet with the Human Services Program Coordinator before enrolling in any Human Services course. Students enrolling in any of the Human Services degree/certificate program options must meet all current basic skill prerequisites.

Written Communication Competency:


ENGL 1301 - Composition I  and ENGL 1302 - Composition II 

Mathematical Skill Competency:


THEA mathematics passing score of 230
OR Accuplacer elementary algebra score of 76 or higher
OR Any college-level mathematics course, MATH 1314 - College Algebra  , MATH 1332 - Contemporary Math I (Math for Liberal Arts Majors I)  or equivalent

*Humanities: choose 3 sem. hrs. from: HUMA 1301, 1302, 2319 or PHIL 1301, 2306, or appropriate course listed in the current college bulletin.

**Natural Sciences: choose 4 sem. hrs. from: BIOL 2401, 2404, or 1408 or approved course listed in the current college bulletin.
